I love the way peonies are an explosion of petals. They're very disorganized flowers. In a good way.

A couple days after I shot this peony, it fully opened up to expose all its yellow pistils you can just barely see between the petals here. This is a flower that is interesting to look at through all the stages of its blooming.

These Japanese dogwoods bloom later than the other dogwoods around town. Last summer I admired the patterns the flowers form on the trees but didn't manage to shoot one before they dropped. And thanks to Sue & Ethan, this year I have neighbors who are generous about letting me hang in their backyard and take all the time I need.

Name this movie:
"What's the state flower of Virginia?"
"The dogwood."
"Isn't that a tree?"
"It's a tree and a flower."
OK, so I've watched The American President a few times. But I never knew how lovely a dogwood is until this spring. (Both the tree and the flower.)

These sweeties smell so good, certain people in my family have been known to resort to theft of public property to enjoy a few sprigs. And when my neighbor Carla saw a huge pile of lilac clippings about to be run through a chipper, she braved the pouring rain, gathered 4 large paint buckets, and gifted several of us neighbors with massive bouquets. My house smelled amazing. Thank you, Carla!

Besides the yellow riots of forsythia, these camellias are some of the earliest flowers in spring with their bold pops of color. As I write this, they're already long gone. Glad I could capture them on camera.

With permission, I snipped a tiny branch of these little pink flowers from my neighbor's bush. Their swirl of color is so solid, it's almost hard to look at. Usually a petal has some variance to it, or the pistil is a different color. But not these evergreen azaleas. They're little, but bold.

These next three images of irises were a gift this spring. Last year, we waited to see what these tubers would bring. We could see the big flat leaf blades, but no flowers ever came. We assumed they were non-producing. But this spring, they put up flowers all over the place. You may have to double click on this image to see the opalescence of its leaves in the early morning light.

These are technically called "bearded iris" but my mother dubbed them "soul patch iris" and I think that's a better fit. I find this one quite tropical for having such a northwest-y home.

Sometimes when I'm out a-shootin', I come across a flower or plant that I can tell is going to make a beautiful photographic image. (Sometimes, it's not until I'm back editing at the computer that the beauty emerges). But with this flower, when I saw it, I knew it would make a great shot. And when I got it on the computer, it needed no editing. That's when you know you've got a winner.

Magnolia trees grow in the wild in Florida, and many people wisely plant them, too. They were all over the neighborhood we were walking through to get to the beach to watch the sunset. The dusky light made each petal seem to glow.

Yes, that's right. I took a picture of a weed. The very weeds Raymond's been trying to get rid of. They're little, but getting up close lets you see the beauty of them. What caught my eye was their symmetry, but also how some of the petals are wavy, like an anemone.

Although it still feels wintry here to me, signs of spring are everywhere, and none so bold as the cherry blossoms. We even have an old cherry tree in our yard, but it's not looking as happy as this one after getting a nice dumping of snow on it last week. I did not expect to see snow until next winter, but it was fun! Especially since it melted quickly... click here to order a standard print or use the drop-down options below to order a

If you are unfamiliar with hydrangeas, they are flower clusters about the size of a cantaloupe. This little guy was one of the many tiny blooms that made up the cluster. From a distance, they look lavender in color, but I really like the composite of purple, blue, red and even turquoise.

These blossoms were so tiny - I wish I had my thumb in the picture so you could get a sense of the scale (but that would make for a not-so-attractive image). Their glassine quality really captured the light in the green house.
