I liked the black and white version of this mushroom cap's underside so much that I made it the primary image (click on it to see the color version). I kind of broke my "don't move it" rule when I took this picture, in that I wouldn't have seen this cool underside if one of our friend's kids hadn't plucked it out of the grass and left it on the patio table. On this particular shooting outing, I was trying to get the names of as many plants as possible. (I think the volunteer I kept pestering was delighted when I left.) Here's the thing: most of the names I got were scientific, and frankly, not at all sexy. But this one had its common name listed: Grandiflora! This tropical plant has wide, flat leaves, that are so purple as to be almost black. I love the contrast of the bright green veins. This is the tip of the branch of a Monkey Puzzle tree. I have always loved these crazy trees! I had only seen them in the Pacific Northwest before coming upon this one in Berkeley. These three images are from a quiet jungle morning. The sun had just risen and some birds were chirping, but thankfully, the roosters were silent. (They didn't seem to restrict themselves to noise at sunrise anyway, and instead preferred to yodel at all times of the day.)
